Ensemble Meridional des Cayes - Calma Pelèrin

Even though the environment seems to be fairly good for agriculture and - as the neighbors proof - almost perfect for travelling, Haïti has started to suffer long before the earthquake in January 2010. To me this country is a bad example of how human beings (and social systems) can completely fuck it up. Clearly colonialism and other external factors have a big influence on this situation. Now again, the Haïtian society seems to be far from working, too, and it makes me sad to see so many suffering from this.

By contrast, the brand new sampler 'Haïti Direct: Big Band, Mini Jazz & Twoubadou Sounds, 1960–1978' pictures the beauty of this country and it's people. Like many songs from my musical paradise Panama, you'll find various influences from the Americas and (Western) Africa, though it has a stronger accent on Caribbean music, of course. I love that. And I love Cumbia. Here you go for a not-from-this-world-10-minute-gem by the Ensemble Meridional des Cayes. If you like it, I highly recommend to buy the whole album. Calma Pelèrin is only one of many pearls.

Teacher & The Preacher - Lay Back & Groove (Autistick Dubb)

Classic House tune that sounds superb when played loud and from vinyl.
Still some cheap copies out there.

Piero Umiliani - Nel Villaggio

Found this gem on the fantastic FlashStrap blog.

'Nel Villaggio' is my personal favorite on 'Esplorazione'. It contains lots of other pearls, though, so I highly recommend to get the whole thing.

I love this video and the Sister Sledge sample which is not on the album Version.

Ólafur Arnalds - Happiness Does Not Wait

The mood of  this beauty reminds me a lot of Jóhann Jóhannsson that you might know from our first Sampler.
'Happiness Does Not Wait' appears on the wonderful compilation 'Erased Tapes IV'.

Hope you dig!

Theo Lawrence - Cuando El Sol Cae (SalSeoul GuestMix #1)

What do you think is the essence of being a good DJ?
And what is a good mix?

Sure, you need some skills and there are many kids out there creating amazing stuff. For me, however, it's rather about the selection of music than about technique. My favorite mixes are like the soundtrack to a journey, bringing the right tune at the right time.

Therefore, I am überglücklich to have Theo Lawrence as our first Guest DJ. On his wonderful Balearic trip 'Cuando El Sol Cae' Theo safely carries us to places we've never seen before. He is professional about those kind of things and I hardly know anyone who's doing it better. I was in love with his sound ever since I heard his amazing podcast on Another Night on Earth and I'm so proud that he made this mix for us.

And how he did....

'Cuando El Sol Cae' got me with the first tone. Don't know how Theo is doing it but his sounds are just always right. They are peaceful and exciting, uplifting and calming, strange yet so familiar, they make you wanna go on and on....and stay forever. You could call it perfect harmony if this wouldn't imply something stable, solid. How can, if at the same time they're so vibrant, lively, loose, energetic, airy? Hhmmm....I guess words won't tell. Just listen. I hope you feel it, too.

Acid Pauli and N U

If you'd be among the few the people following this blog regularly you probably already noticed that Martin Gretschmann aka Acid Pauli from Weilheim, Bavaria, is one of my favorite artists and DJs. I had already known his project Console and the band he's part of, The Notwist, for ages but then Acid Pauli was under my radar for a long time since I quite turned my back on Berlin's electronic music scene in the very early years of this century.

I was more into disco, world music and alike, not realising that this scene I found so boring and close-minded already had moved on and actually covered many of those sounds I loved and still love. Turned out I was close-minded.
I also didn't really care about those hip venues like Bar25, Kater Holzig, about events by the artist collective Bachstelzen and other stuff Pauli was involved and I deeply regret today that I never saw him live. Since he's famous and busy I'm sure there will be a chance to see him one day, though.

Moreover, there's lots of stuff to explore on the web and I wanna share some of it with you. I recommend to listen to his compilation/mix 'Get Lost V' for a general idea of his sound that brings together modern electronic music and natural, tribal stuff from all around the globe. Each and every of the 40 tracks is a killer.

Here is a wonderful and quite recent 'Afro' mix and on his mixloud page you'll find many other great sets. One of the things I like most about Acid Pauli is his variety: you'll hear dub/reggae, African, Latin, and now and then even German folk, ambient and jazz tunes as well as the more clubby stuff he's got famous for.

Pauli's long time friend and musical soulmate N U is another wunderkind collecting beautiful sounds from all over the world and bringing them together in very special ways. Pauli and N U have remixed each other, they've made joint productions and they also often play out together. There are some nice videos of their live sets on the web some of which you can find here.

On his soundcloud page (which is an overflowing treasure chest as well) N U recently released 'Saga', "a legend of sound telling ancient wisdoms from around the world", which contains some later and unreleased productions. The first part is downloadable for a limited time so better be quick to grab your copy. Unfortunately it cannot be embedded here directly but you can still head over to soundcloud to download the set. This one here is a mixcloud rip-off of someone else. A second chapter of 'Saga' is about to come soon.

Hope you dig!

Karriem Riggins - Summer Maddness S.A.

Okay, this one is neither new nor unsung. Still fresh, nonetheless.

Rick Wilhite – My Voyage

Each of the four tracks on this EP by Detroit’s finest Rick Wilhite is excellent and I really wonder that there are still a few copies for reasonable prices out there. My favorite here and in a way the soundtrack for the last two years of my life is the cover of Bobby Caldwell’s ‘What You Won’t For Love‘. I remember playing it at the end of the night in a bar in Berlin. I wanted to calm down the crowd and leave quickly but people went bananas and started dancing on tables.

Another hit, totally different style, is ‘All About You’ which samples ‘Down To Love Town’ by The Originals and also seems to borrow some grooves from ‘Summer Dance’ by The Ritchie Family. Not too sure about it. Listen yourself.

Rio Padice - Tropical Interlune

Fantastic new album by Rio Padice from Napoli. Among all those nices tunes 'Quinto Anello' is particularly beautiful.
Go and get the album!

Bells

When it comes to the annual charts of 2013 one of the albums that seem to be a little underrated is Pantha du Prince & The Bell Laboratory's 'Elements of Lights'. I see that it got released a while back and bells are assumably not among the most beloved instruments of listeners of Dance music after all but not even German magazines mention it (even though some of them tend to put "some fancy experimental stuff" on their list when it isn't really necessary).
Not that I really care about those kinda things but...'Elements of Lights' truly is a masterpiece, every single song on this album is just great. In this zip you'll find the probably most recognized one ('Particle') alongside Ozo's Disco monster 'Anambra' and - just to express our uneasiness with the decision of this year's annual chart judges once more - 'The Revenge of the Giant Cowbell' from Efdemin's fantastic album 'Chicago'.
Happy new year!

Moondog

I love this man! In this zip you'll find a little (Un)Mix of the album 'Viking Sixth Avenue' on Honest Jon's that I made a while back along with 3 other songs that are not on the mix: 'Sparrow', 'Nero's Expedition' and a pitched down version of the 'Bird's Lament'.
