If you'd be among the few the people following this blog regularly you probably already noticed that Martin Gretschmann aka Acid Pauli from Weilheim, Bavaria, is one of my favorite artists and DJs. I had already known his project Console and the band he's part of, The Notwist, for ages but then Acid Pauli was under my radar for a long time since I quite turned my back on Berlin's electronic music scene in the very early years of this century.
I was more into disco, world music and alike, not realising that this scene I found so boring and close-minded already had moved on and actually covered many of those sounds I loved and still love. Turned out I was close-minded.
I also didn't really care about those hip venues like Bar25, Kater Holzig, about events by the artist collective Bachstelzen and other stuff Pauli was involved and I deeply regret today that I never saw him live. Since he's famous and busy I'm sure there will be a chance to see him one day, though.
Moreover, there's lots of stuff to explore on the web and I wanna share some of it with you. I recommend to listen to his compilation/mix 'Get Lost V' for a general idea of his sound that brings together modern electronic music and natural, tribal stuff from all around the globe. Each and every of the 40 tracks is a killer.
Here is a wonderful and quite recent 'Afro' mix and on his mixloud page you'll find many other great sets. One of the things I like most about Acid Pauli is his variety: you'll hear dub/reggae, African, Latin, and now and then even German folk, ambient and jazz tunes as well as the more clubby stuff he's got famous for.
Pauli's long time friend and musical soulmate N U is another wunderkind collecting beautiful sounds from all over the world and bringing them together in very special ways. Pauli and N U have remixed each other, they've made joint productions and they also often play out together. There are some nice videos of their live sets on the web some of which you can find here.
On his soundcloud page (which is an overflowing treasure chest as well) N U recently released 'Saga', "a legend of sound telling ancient wisdoms from around the world", which contains some later and unreleased productions. The first part is downloadable for a limited time so better be quick to grab your copy. Unfortunately it cannot be embedded here directly but you can still head over to soundcloud to download the set. This one here is a mixcloud rip-off of someone else. A second chapter of 'Saga' is about to come soon.
Hope you dig!
THANKS! Been listening through the wonderful sound worlds of Acid Pauli and N U for the last hour... deep deep deep amazing stuff... Still discovering new music all the time. Today has been a day full of good sounds... woah!!! You have any idea which song Acid Paul is playing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMuw33pjp3o ? A live mix/version of "Nu & Jo Ke - Who Loves the Sun"... ?! Feels like a dubbed out version of Bob Marley & The Wailers "Sun is shining" remixed by Berlin's Rhythm & Sound...
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your very nice comments!!! Very much appreciated.
DeleteIt think the song in this video is the Acid Pauli version of 'Who loves the Sun'. Killer tune, indeed!
NO, wait, it's the original 9 mins mix (it's on the Bar25 closing sampler). I guess there's also a later 'Original version' that's not that good.
DeleteThis one sounds pretty much like R&S, you're right!
